Are you tired of trying to get your kids to pose for a traditional family photo in front of the Christmas tree?
This year, consider ditching the dull lineups, and instead, look for ways to capture candid Christmas shots. For example, rather than having your kids stand next to their stockings and smile for the camera, let them dig for treasures while you snap away. The goal is to document genuine emotion, which is hard to do when young children are forced to strike a pose and smile on cue.
Other cute candid Christmas-related photos include:
*Your cat playing with a string of holiday lights
*Your toddler swimming in a sea of discarded wrapping paper
*Your daughter repurposing gift wrap bows to decorate her hair
*Young kids playing with the large boxes that stored their holiday gifts
*Multiple generations baking Christmas cookies
*Uncle Ned trying to balance Christmas ornaments on his forehead
*The entire family lounging around in their matching Christmas pajamas
*Your kids wrapping gifts for family members and friends
*Your spouse placing stamps on your Christmas cards
*Your children sticking their heads out of the Christmas wreath before placing it on the door
In addition to candid shots with members of your clan, don’t forget to document classic winter scenes, such as a fresh blanket of snow in your front yard or icicles hanging from a window ledge. You might also consider taking a stroll around your neighborhood on Christmas Eve. Aim your camera at Christmas light displays, smoke drifting out of your chimney and snowmen.
However, before you snap your outdoor holiday shots, be sure there aren’t distractions in the background such as wires, poles, or cars. Also, consider your lighting sources when shooting outside. While the sun is a better source of light than flash, don’t attempt to take photos mid-day when the bright orb in the sky can cast nasty shadows on your photo subjects.
