Get in and Get Out

When you are shopping, the best method for saving money may be going on the attack and retreating quickly.

Retail stores and grocery stores spend quite a lot of money to experts in order to learn exactly what type of environment will make you linger in their stores for longer and longer periods of time. Why? Because they know that the longer you stay in a store, the more you will buy. Makes sense, right?

Lingering in a store ups the chances that you will find extra items to purchase even if you hadn’t planned on buying them in the first place. You suddenly realize that you need the imported cheese or an extra umbrella. The ties on display remind you that a new outfit would be nice for the next business meeting, and strolling past the chips gives you the inspiration for chips and salsa as an extra appetizer for a family get together.

How many times have you ever been in Walmart or Target and came out with an entire cartload of stuff you found you needed when you just went in for one thing, such as vitamins or band aids? I know that I have been there many times.

The secret is, then, to get in the store and get out as quickly as possible. I would say avoid the store altogether, but I know that isn’t possible or at least practical. Realize that there is a reason that the milk is so far away from the entrance. Make a beeline for what you need and ignore all of the rest, the bright sales signs, the holiday displays, the pleasant music that just makes you want to linger.

Make your list of needs at home and then bring it with you. Write the list out on a large piece of paper and hold it up to your face as a blinder if necessary. Okay, I am being a little tongue in cheek here, but the point is genuine. When you shop, know ahead of time what it is you need and then get in and get out. You’ll save money.
