Get Organized and Make More Space

Big, bulky things take up more space. It just makes sense. So, even if you’re oh-so-efficiently getting rid of papers and other clutter, it’s time to move some of that big stuff out too. This might be the hardest part of getting organized. It’s difficult to give away or get rid of things that either are, or appear to be, valuable.

Appliances

Let’s start with appliances. They can cost a pretty penny. They also appear to make life easier, but that’s only true if we use them. If you have a waffle iron, a food processor, a mini grill, or any other terrific appliance but don’t use it, give it away to make more space. If you haven’t used it in six months, move it from a prominent area in the kitchen to “storage.” After one year, say buh-bye. The same is true of items in other areas of the home. The nail polish dryer may have seemed cool, but how often do you use it?

Furniture and Accessories

Most of us hate to get rid of furniture or accessories. We paid good money for this stuff and it isn’t cheap to replace. We might need that chair later, we might re-style that lamp if we get a creative streak, or we might need all this stuff to decorate our daughter’s dorm room. If your daughter is 16 or older, fine. If she’s seven, move it along. You might consider checking out a consignment shop or used furniture store. You just might make a few bucks from a piece you no longer need, or you might be able to trade it for something you do need.

Coats and Clothes

Clean out those coat closets and drawers. Clothing is another item many people have trouble parting with, especially if you have kids that you might be able to hand some stuff down to. However, if nobody has worn at item for over one year, getting rid of it is probably a good idea. Donate to charity or pass things along to a friend. If it’s something especially nice, a great winter coat, a Christmas dress, etc. find an out of the way place to store it and get rid of the other stuff. As you sort through seasonal gear, take a good look at clothing and coats and jackets. You may have liked them at one time, but if you know you won’t wear these things again, pass them along to someone who can get some use out of them. You’ll feel good about helping and you’ll have more space. Many communities have coat drives this time of year, so watch for one in your area.
