Is there anything cuter than dressing up your little piggy as a turkey?
When my daughter was a baby she really didn’t need to don a butterball costume to get into the holiday spirit. She could just show up to dinner with a few smears of gravy on her chubby cheeks and guests would know exactly which Thanksgiving dish she was masquerading as.
Whether you want your child to sport a Tom the Bird getup to spice up your Thanksgiving dinner, your little guy just landed a starring role in his school’s Turkey Day play, or you just want him to stand out at the annual holiday parade, now is the time to get cracking on the feathery outfit.
Fortunately, there are a slew of options when it comes to buying or making a turkey costume for kids. One of my favorites comes courtesy of Martha Stewart. Even though she didn’t need the extra padding, I seriously considered stuffing my daughter into the domestic diva’s turkey baby costume when she was an infant. The hilarious getup was originally designed by a viewer, but Martha added a few of her own touches. The end result is an oven roasted turkey costume complete with vegetables and a silver platter. The directions are easy to follow and the results are beyond fabulous.
If you have older children, who are begging to dress up as a festive holiday bird and you don’t have the time or creative energy to sew a costume from scratch, then consider this simple option: Find a large cardboard box, cover it with brown paint, and then add red tissue paper feathers to it with some hot glue. To make the beak, get another piece of cardboard, cut out a triangle, paint it yellow, and glue it underneath the eyes on the front of the turkey headpiece. The wattle can be made in a similar fashion by painting leftover cardboard red and attaching it to the bottom front of the box. Finally, glue large red, yellow and brown craft feathers onto an old red T-shirt and pair the entire ensemble with some red tights to complete the look.
