With experts estimating that a single gallon of regular unleaded gas will top $5 by Memorial Day weekend, many travelers are looking for ways to hit the road without breaking the bank.
One group in particular is looking at the sky-high gas prices as a way to promote their passion. Motorcycle enthusiasts are revving up to make this spring and summer hog heaven for newbies. Around the country, motorcycle dealerships are offering open houses for people to get up close and personal with blinged out bikes that can get you to and from your favorite vacation destination without draining your bank account paying for gas.
In addition to sharing the highs of cruising along the open road, motorcycle shop owners are giving potential customers a tutorial in riding safety. Whether you decide to rent or buy, selecting a motorcycle as your vacation vehicle doesn’t come without risks.
If you are planning to escape on two wheels this spring or summer, there are several points you should consider before hitting the highway. For starters, you need to protect yourself from the elements, and not just wind and rain. Sun exposure is a huge factor when riding on the back of a motorcycle for long periods of time. To prevent severe sunburn, lather on the sunscreen and lip balm. Also, you should never get on a motorcycle without a helmet. Other travel essentials include: leather jacket, gloves, sunglasses, rain gear, boots, and a bandana.
You also want to make sure your bike is in proper working condition before heading out on a long trip. In addition, be prepared to deal with minor complications while you are getting from point A to point B. It’s wise to pack a few tools; some tire patches, extra spark plugs, a flashlight and some spare fuses just in case you run into problems on the road.
Finally, don’t forget to bring along a cellphone and a charger. There’s no faster way to ruin a vacation than being stranded on the side of the road without a phone.
