Yesterday was one of those days where I just had to get something tangible done in the morning. Lucky for me, I choose to work on our home inventory, and it gave me the frugal boost that I really needed.
You may have seen some of my posts about creating a home inventory in the Home blog. This is an important thing to have for any household since it lists all of your belongings, helpful if you have a loss of your home. I wanted to get started as soon as I could. So yesterday, when I was looking for something to accomplish, and that something had to be something that the kids could do with me, I choose to work on the home inventory.
We got started in the family room and specifically the electronics. I had the kids pull out the DVDs one my one so I could make a list of them. I figured that this would take about five minutes tops, but as the kids took turn handing me DVDs or telling me what they were, I realized how much that we actually have. DVD after DVD came out of the cubby where they were stored, and I was amazed by the bounty. Some new DVDs were hiding behind the old, giving us new entertainment that we hadn’t yet tapped into. I then looked around at the rest of the room and realized how blessed we are. How many people in this world actually have the luxury to own entertainment, let alone a warm home and plenty to eat?
Now if I get the urge to spend any money on new purchases, go out to eat instead of cook at home, or complain about what we don’t have, I plan on opening the home inventory that I started to remind myself of all that we do have. It may just inspire me.
