About a year ago, my husband and I talked about going to Disney World for Christmas and while it’s not a financial option this year, we are saving up for the possibility of going next year. Spending the holidays away from family and friends may not seem like the holidays unless you are so stressed by the holiday season and time spent with family that it’s the best way for you and your spouse and your children to savor time with each other.
Family Gatherings Can Breed Tension
That gathering the extended family together can breed an atmosphere of tension that can spawn unnecessary arguments between you and your spouse. It can be the stress of visiting relatives or having relatives coming in to stay for a few days to a few weeks. It can be the memories of past holiday excesses, slights, fights and more coming back to haunt the relationship.
The simple fact is – sometimes getting together with the rest of the family at the holidays can just be a disaster waiting to happen. So taking the initiative to get up and get away from it all for the holidays can give you and your spouse something to celebrate. You can plan the vacation with your children, even your young children and getting away on a vacation can take you away from the stress of household responsibilities, bickering families and old grudges coming back to the surface.
Where to Go?
Where you go can be the Caribbean for a cruise, to Disney World for the Mickey fun, to a ski resort where you can spend your Christmas morning on the slopes and come back to the lodge for opening presents. The holiday trip may cost you a few extra presents, but on the other hand – it can make for fantastic memories and more with your family. And isn’t that what the holidays is about? Celebrating together and being together as a family — so if you want to avoid the bickering and negative stress associated with the holidays, consider a holiday vacation together.
