Today I went for a power hike that turned into a trail run. I started my workout with hiking over half a mile. After power hiking, I jogged for as long as I felt comfortable about fifteen minutes, then eased into some intervals of power hiking and sprinting spurts.
Trail running to me is like taking your hike to the next level. You push yourself harder and blast calories faster. However, because of this it is harder on your body.
Trail running is a great outdoor workout. If you like to run in your neighborhood and you like nature, trail running could be for you!
My favorite thing about hitting up the trails is the nature aspect. I love the trees and animals I get to see and the air seems fresher when I am running in the hills. Enjoying your surroundings while working out definitely helps you forget the fact that you are doing a workout.
If you are new to trail running, here are some tips for you:
Proper shoes are very helpful for trail running. With the varying terrain, it is best to wear shoes that have traction and are made for various conditions. Some shoe brands have specifically designed shoes for trail running.
Get to know your trails before you go. I recommend this for hiking and especially for trail running. That way you can be familiar with the terrain and not have any major surprises. Also keep your eyes looking ahead at the trail to see what is coming up, instead of looking down at your shoes.
Ease into your runs by starting off with a shorter run. Give your muscles a chance to get used to the new workout. For example after you do a warm-up you could try running for ten or twenty minutes. After running, slow it down to a power hike followed by a cool-down for your last five minutes of your workout. On your next run you can add five to ten minutes to your running time and continuously increase your time each run till you get to a comfortable running time.
Remember to hydrate and wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
