The last several blogs really show that I still have vacation on the brain. I’ve been remembering past vacations taken during various pregnancies. One issue that continued to crop up was feeling tired. Many women schedule vacations during the second trimester, since the fatigue of the first trimester has passed and the third trimester exhaustion is still safely in the future.
Some women find that family schedules, work obligations and the older kids’ school calendar work together to dictate when vacation can be taken. This may mean vacation will come during the first or third trimester. Even in the second, you will tire faster than when you are not pregnant.
You need to build time into your vacation itinerary for rest. You are on vacation. This means it isn’t really necessary to start the day at the crack of dawn. Spend some time sleeping in a bit in the morning. This will help you start the day off on the right foot. When you have gotten enough rest the night before, you will feel up to seeing the sights at your destination.
Whenever possible, take a break in the afternoon. Maybe do some sightseeing in the morning and early afternoon and then head back to the hotel for a nap before going out for dinner. If you have older children, you may ask your husband to take them for a swim in the hotel pool to give you some rest time. Little ones may need a nap and can rest with you.
We often tend to stay up later when on vacation than we do at home. This is common whether you are pregnant or not. If you are pregnant, you may feel even more tired after a few nights of living like a night owl. Of course, there are things you will want to do at night and that is fine, but don’t over do it. Maybe a late night followed by an early bedtime the next night would work. You will enjoy your vacation more if you are getting the rest you need.
