This week is peak leaf-peeping time in my neck of the woods. The trees are covered with leaves featuring brilliant shades of orange, red and yellow. The gorgeous landscapes near my home are prime for picture-taking, and I have been trying my best to record the colorful show. Whereas, many of you are likely gearing up to snap portraits of your costumed kids on Halloween, consider taking a moment to document the fall landscapes with your camera.
You don’t have to travel far to snap stunning scenery shots. Often, you can find a local landscape to capture nature at its best. For example, if you live near a lake or other body of water, consider heading there at sunset. Use the crystal clear waters to shoot photos of the clouds and trees reflecting off the lake’s surface. Or, wait for a windy day and capture movement in your shots of waves crashing on the shore or causing ripples in a small pond.
Another option is to find some impressive rock formations at a park or nature preserve. Look for rock layers that have naturally eroded and experiment with different angles to make it look as though they are stretching up to the sky. While it can be a challenging proposition to recreate the serene beauty of a natural area in a single shot, don’t be afraid to try. Turn your lens on cascading waterfalls, fall wildflowers or even unique cloud formations.
To add spice to your landscape shots, consider adding some wildlife in the frame. Mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, run amuck in nature. Plan on venturing to a spot where deer, squirrels, hawks or rabbits call home. Then, wait for them to appear before snapping shots of an animal in the foreground and eye-popping scenery in the background.
