Keeping your scrapbook supplies organized is not only a good way to save money, but it also helps keep your children safe. My young daughter is attracted to my colorful scrapbooking tools like a moth to a flame. She loves getting her hands on stickers, stamps, buttons and ribbon. However, her favorite items are my sharp tools, especially my collection of “fancy” scissors, which she likes to steal and use to cut her doll’s hair.
By keeping my scrapbook stash organized and out of reach I don’t have to worry about her getting hurt. Consider placing very small embellishments that can be easily swallowed by babies and pets on high shelves. I use containers with locks or latches and I store my sharp tools in the closet. Out of reach out of mind. So far so good.
Another tip that has served me well over the years is to purge often. I used to go through my scrapbook supplies twice a year, typically around Christmas and summer. However, I eventually found that I could save a lot more money if I did inventory more often. These days I keep on top of my stash by reorganizing every six weeks or so. By purging items I know I will never use I save time, money and space. It doesn’t pay to store supplies you likely won’t use, so don’t be afraid to pull the trigger. Toss, recycle or donate embellishments that no longer fit your style. For example, if you haven’t used those palm tree stamps in more than two years, then it’s a good bet that they will continue to collect dust for another two years. If you can’t find a fellow scrapper who could use your leftovers, then donate your supplies to schools, the YMCA/YWCA or a daycare center. Kids will love being able to make their own crafts with your outdated paper and embellishments.
