Getting Ready for Graduation

My daughter’s school got rid of kindergarten graduation a few years back. The decision annoyed some parents. Personally, I was a bit disappointed for my daughter. After attending her cousin’s kindergarten commencement ceremony, she was excited that she too would be able to participate in the pomp and circumstance when it was her time to graduate.

But, alas, it was not meant to be. I ended up having to host a mini graduation program/party myself, so she would have something to look forward to on the last day of school.

If you are left to plan your little one’s kindergarten graduation party I would suggest the following:

Create a diploma at home. You can make your own or go to websites that specialize in certificates. Just print one up and fill in your child’s name on the downloaded version.

Since I was hosting a party for my daughter I also handed her a rose when she came up to get her diploma. If you have a flower-hating boy, then consider making a bouquet out of lollipops in lieu of blossoms.

If your child’s school gave out a yearbook, then have it on hand for the ceremony. Your child can show grandma and grandpa her classmates’ photos and talk about her teacher’s best traits.

Create a memory book with pictures that were taken at various school events. You don’t have to make it fancy. In fact, you can have your child make one from construction paper. In addition to the photos, add some questions to the book that your child can answer. Some questions to include:

*What is your favorite school memory?

*What was the best thing you learned this year?

*What was the funniest thing that happened to you in class?

*What was your favorite school lunch?

*What was your favorite field trip?

*What are the names of the new friends you made this year?

*What are your plans for the summer?

Help your child write out the answers or simply have her draw out her answers.
