With the holidays only a month or two away, now is the perfect time to make sure that you are ready for guests, whether invited or unexpected. You can make your guests feel at home not matter whether you have a complete guest suite or just an air mattress. Here are some tips on becoming prepared. Trust me, it will make the upcoming season much easier.
First determine where your guests will be staying. Do you have a designated room or an area of the home? Make sure that you have everything you need, including furniture, such as a bed, air mattress, pull-out couch, sleeping bag, etc. I find it helpful to have an area of the closet just for guest linen, such as pillows, sheets, blankets and towels. This way, it can all be pulled out at once as needed.
Keep the guest space clean, even if you aren’t expecting anyone. Not only will this make it nice for unexpected guests, but you won’t have to have the big project of getting the room or space ready to be occupied.
A basket full of niceties can be stored in the guest room or closet until needed. A few favorite books and magazines will make your guests feel at home and give them something to do if they are early risers or night owls. Books with short stories are nice, because your guests won’t have to commit to an entire novel.
On the day of the stay, add a carafe of water with glasses or plastic cups (if there are kids) and some fresh flowers. A little basket of snacks, such as granola bars, dried fruit, candy, and more will help curb hunger pains and keep the guests from feeling awkward about raiding the refrigerator.
Extra items that your guests might have forgotten are always nice to include. Some things in this category include toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, a hairdryer, a comb, sanitary napkins or tampons, facial soap, lotion, shampoo, etc.
