You would be amazed at how many homes on the market are passed by simply due to presentation or lack thereof. If you were interested in buying a home but you walked in only to find a house filled with clutter, chances are you would never be able to see past the piles of “stuff” to imagine a clean, organized home with your furniture. Unfortunately, a cluttered home is a major mistake made by people trying to sell a home.
Start with the kitchen, which is the most important room of the house. Remove everything possible from the countertops to include toaster and can opener. Instead, put these things in a cabinet where they can be pulled out easily when needed. Next, go through your cabinets, ensuring that when opened, they are neat and clean. If you have too many dishes, glasses, or pots and pans, box some up for storage. The key is to make your kitchen appear streamlined with ample countertop and cabinet space, a huge selling point.
The same is true for drawers. Invest in an inexpensive drawer organizer and toss out or give away things you never use. You also want to pay attention to cabinets for food such as a pantry. Instead of throwing everything inside, line the food up nicely. Then, you also want to clean out cabinets underneath the sink, a place often overlooked. Organize your cleaning supplies and other items again so things are neat and orderly.
After taking the clutter out of the kitchen, turn your attention to the closet. As we all know, closets are prime targets for clutter but because closet space is so important to most people, you want to make the closet look as big as possible. Remove clothes that you could donate to charity, throw out old items that are stained or torn, and organize with new hangers and a shoe organizer. You would be amazed at what a difference this will make in the showing of your home.
Something many people overlook is the clutter of furniture. This means having too much furniture or a mishmash of furniture in a room, making it appear disorganized and small. Instead, choose some of your finer pieces and put the others in storage or a larger room so you can create the illusion of space. Even the storage area or garage should be orderly. Remember, you could always have a garage sell and then install metal cabinets on which to place your storage items. Making these simple changes will make your home much more sellable and appealing to potential buyers.
