Getting the Most Out of Your Makeup

frugal make up How many times do we have to throw out make up because it dries out, changes color, gets weird or even breaks? Every time you have to replace something, it costs money. Save your dollars with the following tips. The secret is to both preserve your makeup so it can be used longer, and to use it smartly, so you get the most out of it.

Take advantage of rebates and return policies. Get to know the various rebates and return policies before you buy your makeup. The better stores usually have policies in place that say that if you don’t like the makeup, even if it is only the color, you can bring it back for a replacement. Do this, and you avoid having to toss and re-buy items that looked good in the store but not at home.

Store nail polish in the refrigerator. By keeping your nail polish in the refrigerator, it will stay usable for a longer period of time. The cold seems to keep it from gumming up and getting too thick.

Store your mascara wand outside of the mascara tube. By keeping the wand out of the mascara, you will make it last longer. There will be no build up of dried mascara to gum up your lashes, and you’ll keep more bacteria out of your makeup, which will help prevent it from going bad. After each use, wipe the wand on a clean tissue and store it in a sealed plastic bag.

Another mascara saving tip: avoid “pumping” the wand up and down in the mascara. This introduces air into the tube, which helps the mascara dry out faster than it should.

Be gentle with eyeshadow, powder blush and other “dry” makeup. If it gets dropped or knocked around in your purse, it can crack and fall out of the container. I don’t know how many eye shadows I have lost this way.

By less makeup but concentrate on ones with multiple uses. If you can use a particular make up for more than one thing, let us say a matt lipstick as a cream blush or a cheek color as a bronzer, you’ll be more likely to use it all up before it goes bad. You’ll also save on the cost of the other items it is replacing.
