Getting Weighed at School

Well as I mentioned before my kids are doing the weight loss journey with me. We had an issue come up this week. Did you know that kids from 3rd – 12th grade are weighed at school now and their Body Mass Index is calculated? Well last year when they did it they sent a letter home with our kids saying if they were obese or not. When I got the letter home last year I called the school and asked them not to do it anymore. When my now 10 year old son did it last year he saw that he was overweight and stopped eating breakfast and stopped eating lunch at school.

Now they say that they are doing this to make the kids realize they are overweight but does the school think our pediatrician never mentions it? What about the facts we are not vampires we do see the reflections in the mirror if you know what I mean. Last year they did not reply to me about my request to opt out of this. I mean isn’t school supposed to be a safe learning environment? How can making a kid get on a scale and making them feel bad about themselves make school a great learning environment?

Our school sends home the monthly hot lunch menu and it now it shows the average calorie count for the meals. Here is an idea if they want healthier kids at their school then maybe they should take off the fried chicken, nachos, burritos etc. and add let’s say grilled chicken, salads, flavored water. We don’t let our kids order hot lunches very often because of the bad food choices on it. We have been sending salads, flavored water packs (like juice packs but with 5 calories), fruits and veggies healthier food choices. If I can do it why can’t the school?

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
