In addition to web links and trading advertising, there are other ways that you can get your business name out there into the world without spending an arm and a leg. Instead of going for a big ad that might be out of your small business budget, consider trying to get your business listed in various directories.
While there are some directories (like the telephone book, for example) that do charge for listing your business information, but there are also many publications and web sites that do not. Spending some time investigating the various publications available in your industry or that might be good “matches” for your market might turn up several possibilities. Contact the publishers of the directories to find out what is available, the price, and if there is any way you can work out a trade—perhaps listing their site on your web site in exchange for your inclusion in the directory.
Trade publications and specialty magazines often put out an annual “directory” of members that includes contact information in addition to the business name and a brief description of the operation. If you get any publications or are a member of an organization, check to see if they put out a directory or have one on their web site and find out how to get your business included.
There are a couple of considerations when it comes to directories—make sure that you understand exactly what will be expected of you, if anything. Any fees, reciprocal advertising, etc. should be disclosed in advance. Will it be automatically renewed or will you have the option to renew or opt out? Also, make sure you understand about maintenance and keep track of where your information is listed. This way, if you make changes to your business (address, phone, web site URL, etc.) you can notify the directory publisher to have the information updated as well.
