There is no debate right now about powdered milk being a great bargain, especially when regular milk is passing $4 a gallon. But, getting your family to actually enjoy powdered milk can be a challenge. It definitely doesn’t taste or smell like fresh milk, and there are a number of associations that people have with powdered milk that make it a negative thing even before it is tasted. Here are some ways to get your family to open up about powdered milk, or at least consume some if it.
The don’t ask don’t tell policy
Many people associate powdered milk with being poor or being deprived. No one wants to feel as thought they can’t afford a basic staple such as milk. One way to get around this is to sneak powdered milk in with the regular milk. Split a gallon of milk in two and fill in those two gallons with the reconstituted powdered milk. Or try replacing only a third of the fresh milk. Don’t announce what you have done and hide the evidence. Then see if anyone notices.
Use powdered milk in recipes
Powdered milk doesn’t change the taste of a recipe when it is used instead of fresh milk. There is one exception to this that I found, and that is in making pudding. Other than that, baked goods and other items work just fine when using reconstituted powdered milk. My famous bread machine rolls use powdered milk as an additive, and they fly off of the table. Turn your milk purple
Try using the powdered milk to make a purple cow. Fill a glass two-thirds of the way with the reconstituted powdered milk. Then fill the remaining one-third of the glass with grape juice. Stir. Somehow, the grape juice takes the typical taste away from the powdered milk.
