Kids love getting the chance to purchase their own gifts for family and friends. It is a great practice to get into and can teach kids about the real meaning behind giving gifts to those we love and admire.
Most kids naturally have a limited budget. Finding ways that they can stretch that budget will also help them learn about money and financial choices. You can give your children the opportunity to make their gift dollars go a long way when you guide them to shop smartly.
Right about this time, holiday bazaars should be popping up around your community. These could be craft fairs, farm sales or rummage sales. Often, you can find some nice hand crafted or unique gift items for good prices. You can usually find high quality items for a kid’s budget. Plus, this would make a great family day, since these events sometimes also offer food and other interesting things to see.
Farmer’s markets are another fun place to shop for holiday gifts. While you might associate such markets with food only, many offer other items. The one closest to our home offers everything from flea market type items and used video games to new books, toys and hand crafted items, as well as produce, candy, meat and other food.
Shop the dollar aisles at your local Target. Target offers a few rows of shelves that contain products priced at $1-$3. These can make great gifts for classmates and friends. You’ll find stationary, small toys, books, puzzles, art supplies and more.
Craft stores can be another source of gifts. Have your kids use their gift money to purchase supplies that can then be used to create homemade gifts for everyone. Check the bargain bins, the clearance aisles and the sales. Even seasonal materials can be repurposed for holiday gifts. Pumpkin and apple stickers from fall might be used to decorate a recipe box for someone’s kitchen, just for an example.
