Give Your Layouts a Lift

You don’t have to spend a ton of time or money adding pizzazz to your scrapbook layouts. In fact, some of the most eye-popping accents can be created by incorporating simple techniques such as decoupaging.

Recently, my mom’s passion for decoupaging had spread to scrapbooking. She loves to decoupage chipboard using patterned paper scraps. Small bits of leftover scrapbook paper come in handy when you want to add a new dimension to chipboard. All you need to do is place some Mod Podge on the paper, let the adhesive dry thoroughly, and then trim the excess with a craft knife.

If you are decorating a theme page, then you might want to decoupage with related photos instead of paper. You could also use images from greeting cards, maps, brochures, magazine clippings, wrapping paper, sheet music or fabric scraps depending on your particular page design. Just remember, if you decoupage with bulkier materials, you may have a hard time getting your album to close all the way.

Once you embellish items, such as chipboard you can add them to your layout in a variety of creative ways. For example, decoupage chipboard accents can be used for photo corners, as bullet points in a list or to decorate letters in a page title. Chipboard also adds a nice touch to photo frames. What’s more, if you are willing to spend a bit more you can buy accents that are already decorated. Fancier accents typically come with adhesive backs, so all you have to do is peel and stick them to your layout.

Stamps are another simple and inexpensive way to give your layouts a creative lift. To make stamps pop on a page, consider adding flocking powder to them. Cover hearts, flowers, swirls, and star stamps with different colored flocking powder to give them a fuzzy look. You could also opt to highlight a few specific spots of a detailed stamped image, such as a tree or bouquet of flowers.
