Updating your space this month can be quick and easy. You don’t need a lot of money or a lot of time. You don’t even need a lot of design expertise. Just use the following guidelines to give your space a new look, just in time for spring.
Rearrange Your Furniture
It is amazing how easily you can update a space simply by rearranging the furniture. You can start with taking the existing furniture in the room and rearranging it, but also consider swapping out furniture and accessories from other rooms. For example, I originally bought two matching chairs for our office, but we decided to use one of the chairs in our living room, where it fits in nicely and gives some continuity and flow to the first floor.
Cover Your Furniture
Whether you use custom furniture slipcovers or improvise with fabrics that you may already have at home, such as a pretty sheet or silk shawl, covering your existing furniture will make it look like new. This can really change your whole look, especially if you go one step further and coordinate your accessories, such as covering pillows or decorating lampshades.
Choose a Focal Point
Sometimes all it takes to complete a room and turn it from blah to wow is to have a strong focal point in the room. You may already have a focal point built into the room that isn’t being called out, such as a fireplace or a large window. You can play this up or simply create a focal point by painting an accent wall, hanging a group of photos or using wall decals.
Infuse Homey Smells
Sometimes all that you need to give your space a new “look” is to give it a new scent. Atmosphere can be created with pleasant aromas. Try a favorite scent in a candle or aromatherapy diffuser. You can also simply manufacture your own homey scents by making apple butter in the crockpot, baking fresh cookies or cutting some oranges or lemons.
