I know that I normally try to write about ways to stay focused and fight off all the distractions that can pop up when one is trying to work from home. It hit me, however, that we are just people and there are those times when no matter how hard I try, the world just seems to be conspiring against my actually getting any work done. Sometimes, the best thing for me to do is to stop fighting and give in to those distractions…
I tend to cling to an idealized vision of what working at home COULD be like–quiet, peace, my totally controlling my own environment and productivity level. The fact is often quite different and ask the cats chase each other across my feet, or the kitten jumps onto the desk and runs off with another ball point pen, or my children keep coming in to ask me questions or make requests–I sometimes wonder why I am even trying to do this working from home and my home business at all! There are times when it would be so much easier to go off to work at a traditional job and sequester myself from all these distractions!
I can’t always fight it–there are people and situations that seem to need me more than my work and as scattered as it might make me feel, I know this is one of the reasons I have chosen to build a home business and work to create the flexibility and space in my life to be able to attend to these “distractions.” So, there are times for staying focused and trying to keep the work flow going regardless, and there are times for turning off the computer, closing the door to the work room, and attending to those “other things” that are calling us away.
