I recently did an event at a bookstore where I showed everyone how to make small greeting cards with paper and other media. The crowd happened to be mostly preschoolers and their parents, and I learned something valuable when I watched them make their creations: Give a preschooler some glitter glue and he or she cares little about anything else.
Even though there was a wide variety of materials to choose from, and my examples used glitter glue sparingly, each card made by a preschooler was glittery from top to bottom, and mounded up in between. I’m not a stickler for copying examples–in fact I like it better when people come up with their own take on whatever I’ve shown them, but this was a little over the top. I kept going around the tables saying, wouldn’t you like to tie on a ribbon? Add a cute sticker? Color on a penguin? Noooo. More glitter glue, please.
The event went on longer than normal, too, because we had to pry the glue pens out of the wee ones’ fingers to get them to go. So, if you have a preschooler, gather up some glitter glue and let them go for it. This is the simplest glitter glue craft, and you don’t have to make stars. Any shape will do, as long as it doesn’t get too big.
Glitter Glue Stars
You will need:
Glitter glue in squeeze tubes with large nozzles (you want a thick line when you squeeze)
Waxed paper
Tape
1. Tape a piece of waxed paper to a table. Let your child squeeze glitter glue into shapes like stars and hearts. Small, compact shapes work best.
2. Let the glue dry overnight. Peel off the shapes and stick them to a window or mirror. They cling to any glass surface, and peel off when you are done with them.
