In general, gluten-free versions of things like crackers, cookies, and granola bars are not going to taste exactly like the ones that have wheat, barley, or other ingredients that contain gluten. Many gluten-free products taste good, but different from what you might have been used to. I recommend the gluten-free crackers made by Glutino.
Crackers were one of the foods that I missed the most after I learned that I had a gluten allergy. They make great snacks, they help settle your stomach, they are easy to eat while typing. Fortunately, there are several different kinds of gluten-free crackers to choose from. Previously, I did a food review of the Table Crackers by Schar. This time, I tried the Gluten-Free Crackers by Glutino.
I didn’t realize it when I bought a box of these crackers, but it turns out that Glutino makes them in different flavors. I selected the “original” flavor, perhaps because it was all I saw on the shelf at the grocery store. They also make table crackers, cheddar crackers, vegetable crackers, and “multigrain” crackers. All varieties are gluten-free.
The “original” crackers from Glutino contain the following ingredients: corn starch, white rice flour, organic palm oil, modified corn starch, dextrose, liquid whole egg, yeast, salt, guar gum, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, mono and diglycerides, natural flavor
The box points out that these crackers do contain eggs. They also may contain traces of soy, milk, and sesame. The front of the box notes that these crackers are wheat free.
Inside the box are two, smaller, silver bags. Each are filled with crackers, and each is tightly sealed. I like this feature, because it means that I don’t have to worry about an entire box of crackers going stale as I work my way through the box.
The crackers are a bit thicker than “table crackers” would be. They taste just fine on their own, but not like the wheat crackers that I was used to eating. These crackers are the type that are designed so that people can put things on top of them.
So far, I have tried them with slices of cheddar cheese on top, and that was really good. They are also good with peanut butter, (I recommend the nut butter from Justin’s, which is also gluten-free). However, as you might expect, crackers and peanut butter can get a bit dry.
I suspect that these crackers would be good with tuna salad on them, and might make a good substitute for toast. The box suggests trying them with cream cheese, which would make a nice substitute for a bagel.
