Go Back To School

One of the most important things we can do is get an education. I always tell my daughter, “No matter what happens you will never lose your education.” When we become single parents our education may take a backseat to all the other things that have to be done. This is a bad idea, it is more important than ever to continue your education. You owe it to yourself and your children to make sure that you can pursue a career that makes you happy and have the skills needed to support your family.

While it may seem impossible, there are many resources available to help you. Talk to your family, let them know what you want to do, and see if they can help with child care. Talk to your kids and find out how much they are willing to pitch in around the house to allow you to study. Talk to other moms about their experience with going back to school, what they found helpful and not so helpful.

Do a Google search for grants for single mothers, you will be amazed at what comes back. There are many opportunities for single moms to finish their education, you just have to look for them. First check federal programs, next check into state financial aid, many states have scholarships and grants geared toward nontraditional students. There are also many private scholarships available.

The important this is to get started. Once you have some momentum going it will be easier to stay on course, find the resources you need and get your degree. When it comes to childcare, many campuses have child care on site for students at a discounted rate. Don’t stress about how you are going to do it all, just get started.

Everyone will benefit from you furthering your education. You and your children will enjoy a better standard of living and you are setting a great example for your kids. Remember as you get busier, quality, not quantity is what matters about the time you spend with your children. Even when you are not with them, you are still caring for them and their future.
