Going, Going, Gone?

Going, going, gone – that’s the way it appears it is heading with Christmas at least as far as one pre-school is concerned. On the news this morning I heard about a pre-school that has decided to ignore Christmas. Not just the Christmas carols and religious content but even things like Santa and reindeer. They are aiming to have an end of year party but there will be no mention of Christmas in any way shape or form. Their reason is they don’t want to offend anyone. What about the people who are offended by them ignoring Christmas?

On the way back from our beach walk this morning Mick and I were discussing this after the hearing it on the news. His comment really summed it up I thought was ‘in trying to be everything to everybody, they end up being nothing to nobody.’

I hope we never get to the stage here in Australia where we can’t wish people a Happy Christmas and celebrate the birth of Jesus.

In our marriage and family, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of God’s Son. That’s why we love to sing carols, and I mean carols not songs like White Christmas and Jingle Bells, but carols that focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

We like to go to church and to have a nativity set and other things that show what we believe. When we send out cards they are cards that depict the Christmas story and have a verse from the bible or other appropriate message on them. They’re just little ways of letting people know where we are coming from and what we believe.

We’ve never made a big fuss about Santa. If other people want to that is up to them but it is not what as a couple and family we have ever chosen to do.

Everyone has different Christmas traditions. I’d love to hear what Christmas means to you and what your traditions are.
