Going Green in the Bedroom

bedroom When we think about going green, it usually means that we focus on the main parts of the house, or on general energy use throughout. But sometime, we forget about the room by room aspects of going green. There are improvements that can be done to decrease your home’s carbon footprint and save you money. When we take a look at a specific room, we often find ideas for saving the planet that we might have otherwise overlooked.

Let’s take a look at the bedroom and all of the ways that we can focus on this room to go green. Don’t forget about standard strategies to go green in this room, such as using reclaimed wood flooring and previously loved furniture.

You can reduce your energy bill by simply paying attention to your bedroom window treatments. Leaving the treatments open during the day in the winter and closed at night. Do the opposite for the hot summer months. Invest in custom shades or insulated curtains to reduce your energy bill. You can also purchase optically clear window film.

Choose bedding made from sustainable or recycled products. You can turn outgrown children’s clothing into a quilt, for example. Or, purchase bedding made from cotton or bamboo. Natural Elements Pillows are made out of recycled plastic bottles.

Keep the television out of the bedroom. Not only can the television kill romance, but you are more likely to watch it aimlessly instead of purposefully when it is in the bedroom. It can also tend to be left on all night if you fall asleep while watching it.

Replace the batteries in any of your bedroom electronics with rechargeable ones or opt for manual or crank items if appropriate. A wind up alarm clock will work just as well as an energy-hogging digital alarm clock, for example. Identify electronics in the bedroom that you can do without.
