Going Out to Eat without Going Broke

Everyone enjoys going out to eat, at least occasionally, but it can get expensive. When trying to save money or pay off debt, dining out is usually one of the first things people cut back on. Still, whether it’s for pleasure or convenience, few people completely write off restaurants. That doesn’t mean you have to go for broke when you go out.

Take Out vs. Dining In

Whatever the reason is that you decide to choose a restaurant over eating at home, you can enjoy your meal without feeling guilty. You can still save some money by making careful choices. One of those choices is deciding on carry-out instead of eating at the restaurant. By taking your meal home you can avoid purchasing drinks and extras and you won’t have to leave a tip. For a family of four, this should create a savings of at least $10.00.

Dining In Choices

If you need a break and don’t feel like taking your meal home, sit down and relax at the restaurant. Limit the menu choices for your children. They can still order on their own, but allow them to choose from certain items that are not overly expensive. Explain before entering the restaurant that extras, desserts, and costly substitutions are not part of the bargain. Also, choose water to drink, or coffee or iced tea, which at least include refills. Children should also be encouraged to ask for water, since a few pennies worth of soda generally costs $1.00 or more per person. Always remember to look at the specials as well. Many restaurants offer great savings if you choose one of the daily specials. Remember to set aside enough money for a tip (skipping the tip is not an appropriate way to save money… it doesn’t have to be a lavish amount, but it should be fair).

Take Advantage of Coupons and Discounts

Many pizza places and other casual restaurant chains offer coupons and other discounts. Pizza Hut allows children under twelve to eat free one night per week (Tuesday in this area, but check local stores for participating locations and terms). One child under twelve may eat free if accompanied by a paying adult. Pizza Hut also offers a calendar that has select coupons for each month. Ask about this and other discounts and your family can still enjoy dining out without overspending.
