Wow! Going to the movies is really expensive these days! Not only are the tickets costly, but the snacks really add up quickly too.
Try these tips for making your family outing a little more wallet friendly:
First, be sure to pick an appropriate movie. Check the reviews to make sure it is something not only that your family will enjoy, but something that you are comfortable allowing your children to watch. Despite ratings, many movies contain things that aren’t exactly for kids, and these things don’t always make it into the previews. Many a parent has been frustrated by having to gather children and leave half way through a film after paying all that money.
Next, see if your local movie theater has a matinee or a discount rate for family night. In my area, family night is on Tuesday, and matinees are on Sunday afternoon, both of which are half price occasions.
When it comes to snacks, check the difference in price between sizes. There may not be much difference between small, medium, and large. Also, sharing goes a long way. It is often much more economical to share a large container of popcorn than it is to purchase two or three small ones.
With drinks, be sure to ask for easy ice. Most movie theaters and similar establishments pack the cup full of ice and give you very little soda. At $2.00 and up for a small cup, make sure you actually get a little soda with your ice.
If you are planning to take several children to the movies for a birthday party or other special occasion, call ahead to see if there are any group discounts available that you can take advantage of. You won’t usually be able to get a discount on a weekend night, or any other time the theater is particularly busy. However, if you schedule your outing for a slow time, you may be able to save a great deal of money. It certainly doesn’t hurt to call and ask.
