I’ve written about Feeding America before. They are the organization that united with the postal workers one Saturday each year to collect canned and dry goods for the hungry. Actor David Arquette is the chairman of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council.
Now, band Good Charlotte has joined Feeding America to “bar hunger.” I put that in quotes because, yes, the organization is trying to end hunger, but it is a bit of a play on words. Now, when you purchase specially marked Snicker bars, you can text the code on the wrapper and the company, through Feeding America, will provide two meals to a family in need.
Good Charlotte is fronted by identical twins Benji and Joel Madden. You may have heard a bit more about Joel – he is married to Nicole Richie. The brothers are also members of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council.
Why are the guys helping out Feeding America? In an advertisement that appeared in US Weekly recently, the brothers said that while they realized hunger was a problem, they never thought about it being in their own backyard. They said they saw this as an opportunity to give back and that was really an exciting prospect.
But, the cause hits even closer than that. The brothers admitted that seeing families in need now reminded them of their own family and its struggles when they were younger.
The “Bar Hunger” campaign is not the only Feeding America event Good Charlotte has taken part in. This past Memorial Day weekend, the band was one of the headliners at the Festival for Humanity Concert in Vernon, New Jersey. Others at the festival included Third Eye Blind, The Misfits, Soul Asylum, and John Popper. All in all, there were 40 bands playing over 20 stages. The festival not only benefited Feeding America, but also PETA, The American Red Cross, YMCA, Vet2Vet, Cop2Cop, Music for Humanity, DALI, and Farm Aid Member Regional Growers.
So next time you want a chocolaty snack, look for a Snickers with the Bar Hunger code on the wrapper.
