I apologize for the delay in bringing you the Gospel Doctrine lessons for the last several weeks. We’ve been unable to attend church, due to illness, and I’m just getting caught up now.
Our recommended reading for this lesson is:
2 Nephi 6-10
Also:
2 Nephi 9:10, 9:14, 9:18, 9:28, 9:39, 9:51.
Jacob, one of Nephi’s younger brothers, became a great prophet as he followed in the footsteps of his father and brother. Throughout 2 Nephi and in the Book of Jacob, we see him give several heartfelt discourses on the plan of salvation. In 2 Nephi chapters 6-10, our specific course of study for today, he speaks of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, which doctrine is central to our religion and to our whole existence here on earth.
Through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us, we overcome temporal death (His resurrection paved the way for our resurrection) and He made it possible for us to overcome spiritual death (the Atonement makes it possible for us to repent). We must be willing to repent in order to accept that gift. However, sometimes our vanity and foolishness keep us from listening to the words of those who have been sent to help us. (See 2 Nephi 9:27-38.)
Jacob told his listeners about the coming of Christ and His eventual crucifixion, but he also told them that if they would listen and repent, Christ would redeem them from their sins. How has Christ saved you from your sins? How has He restored you?
As we conclude the lesson, we are encouraged to think about the many ways Jesus Christ has done for us, for our friends and family, and the ways in which our lives are better and enriched because of the blessings that come to us from having a personal relationship with our Savior.
