The scripture study for this week’s lesson focuses on the story of the widow’s mite. The example is well known, but I will review it. While Jesus sat against the treasury, many of the rich cast in their contributions. A widow approached and offered only two mites, a tiny sum of money in comparison. Christ lauded her for her giving, noting that “she of her want did cast in all she had.”
What touched my heart was the footnote from verse 42, which cites Deuteronomy 16:17. “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee.” That is, we ought give according to the ways we have been blessed.
Tithing is, of course, the first thing that springs to mind, but what I began to ponder was the offerings. As I read, I remember a scripture that hit me when I was reading the Kirtland Temple dedication last winter. In D&C 109:5, we read, “out of our poverty we have given of our substance to build a house to thy name.” At that time, I pondered just how deep the poverty of those early Saints truly was. Compared to them, even many of the most unfortunate of America would appear to be blessed and prosperous. How much more so am I, even with my tight budget? At that time, I resolved to increase my offerings, particularly in the my temple building arena.
But money is not the only way to give. We give with our time and with our talents. As I have worked with those receiving aid from the church, we in our Relief Society Presidency have sought ways that those sisters could give of their talents and aid others in the ward who stand in need. One sister was asked to make bread for others going through a hard time. Similarly, brethren may be able to help care for the church building. Someone from the family might serve in the Bishop’s Storehouse as a way to give.
There are so many ways that we can give and serve those who are around us. Look upon your strengths and talents and ask yourself what more you can be doing. How much has the Lord blessed you? How much of that can you use to bless others?
