Got Velcro?

You can use Velcro brand or any hook and loop fastener for these projects. You may have seen these toys before, but they are as much fun to make, as they are to play with.

Catch and Stick

Items Needed:

  • Plastic lids (from whip topping container, coffee can, etc.)
  • Velcro or other hook and loop fastener
  • Light, plastic ball
  • Elastic (3/4″ to 1″ wide)
  • Stapler

Cover the centers of two lids with Velcro, using the type that has an adhesive backing. Use a large strip so there is plenty of area to catch the ball.

Attach a strip of Velcro or other fastener to the ball, wrapping it all the way around, until one end of the strip meets the other.

Cut a 4″ long strip of elastic for each catcher. Staple the elastic to the center of the back of each lid to form a loop. The loop will become a handle to hold the catcher.

Velcro “Dart” Game

Items Needed:

  • 1 large sheet of white poster board
  • Small sheets of poster board (in different colors)
  • Velcro or other fastener
  • Light, plastic balls

Use the smaller pieces of poster board to cut out different sized circles.

Attach the circles randomly to the large sheet of poster board. Designate the number of points a player will receive for hitting each target, and write that number below the circle (you can use other shapes besides circles if you like).

Apply Velcro to each target.

Cover the balls with Velcro as described in the project above. These are your “darts.”

You can use different colored balls. Purchase three or four of each color, and have each child make his or her own set of darts using a particular color.

Throw the darts at the targets and write down the number of points each child receives per turn.
