Madtown is rockin’ tonight as hundreds of graduates from the University of Wisconsin-Madison descend upon legendary State Street to celebrate four (or five… or six) years of hard work hitting the books in the hallowed halls of the historic institute of higher learning. It’s hard to believe that it’s been more than 15 years since I did the same. I clutched my diploma and grinned like a monkey as the chancellor moved the tassel on my graduation cap.
I don’t remember much after that.
Kidding. Sort of.
In the days and weeks to come, millions of students will be celebrating their graduations from kindergarten, high school and college with bashes big and small. If you are looking to some spice to your grad’s party, consider these fun ideas:
Decorations: Traditional graduation party decorations include banners that scream “Congratulations,” mortar boards, faux diplomas, streamers in school colors, and “Class of 2011” balloons. To personalize the party decor for your special grad, consider adding personal touches, such as photos, mementos from class events, athletic or academic awards and yearbooks.
Theme: The reason for the party is to honor the graduate, but you can also select another theme to add more flavor to the get-together. For example, consider a career theme. If your graduates spent years preparing himself for a future as a doctor, engineer, teacher or stockbroker, then design the party decor, games and menu around his career choice.
Gifts: Instead of gifting your grad with a briefcase or a leather organizer, consider more practical gifts. High school graduates will need household items for their dorm rooms and college graduates will likely need a few housewarming gifts for a new loft or apartment. Another option is to leave out a book where each guest can writes advice to the new grad about how to deal with life post-commencement.
