Great Books for Daddies to Be

Father’s Day was this past weekend. If this is your first baby, the holiday will soon take on new meaning for you and your partner. Becoming a father is a defining moment in a man’s life. Here are some great books for your man on the subject of fatherhood.

Becoming a Father: How to Nurture and Enjoy Your Family by William Sears, MD. Sears is a pediatrician and the father of eight children. He is best known as the person who coined the phrase “attachment parenting”. Sears has written many books on the subject of parenting. This one is written especially for fathers.

In the book, Sears shares his experience of becoming a father and the changes that take place in a marriage after the children arrive. There are sections in the book on balancing work and family, discipline and working families. He covers important topics such as offering support during labor, for breastfeeding and the benefits of co sleeping.

Father’s First Steps: 25 Things Every New Dad Should Know by Robert W. Sears, MD and James Sears MD. Dr. Bob and Dr. Jim are the sons of Dr. William and Martha Sears. They are in practice with their father in California. They are also fathers with some valuable advice to give new dads.

The book is divided into 25 aspects of fatherhood. The authors offer good advice for fathers interested in taking an active role in parenting their babies. Some topics discussed in the book include support for the mother in labor, bonding with the new baby and understanding baby’s cues and baby talk.

FatherNeed: Why Father Care Is as Essential as Mother Care for Your Child by Kyle D. Pruett. The author is a Yale child psychiatrist and author. In the book, he builds a great case about the importance of supporting and encouraging the connection between fathers and babies and the life long benefits of this connection.

In the book, Pruet offers fathers valuable advice for each stage of childhood, from infancy through adolescence. He discusses the different benefits that fathers bring to the table and how an active father is beneficial for the whole family. A variety of family situations are discussed from families with stay at home moms to single parent fathers. Pruet discusses and documents recent research as well as offering practical advice for new dads.
