If you have ever traveled with children, then you know how challenging this can be. Although the kids are excited to reach the destination, getting there is another thing. The best thing you can do is be prepared to keep the kids occupied or entertained. I know our last trip as a family was much better because we played several of the games I am sharing with you. Although the children will need to learn some patience along the way, having something to do will make the overall trip more enjoyable.
First, teach the children to play the mystery writing game. For this, one child would turn his/her back to the other child. The second child would write a letter on the back of the first child using only the finger. The first child must then guess the letter. If the children are older, then the writing could consist of small words or even animals. The nice thing about this game is that it is not competitive, meaning no winner or loser, just good fun.
Of course, one of the all-time favorites that I even played when I was a child is the license plate game. However, this modified version has a twist. Before heading out on your trip, print off a map for each child, just a simple map that shows the states. Then, during the course of the trip, both going and coming back home, have the children put an “X” on the map in the appropriate state each time they see that license plate. At the end of the trip, it is fun to see who ended up with the most states.
You can also purchase an inexpensive TV tray unless your car has a flat surface where the children are sitting. Then, teach them how to play card games such as “Go Fish” and “Old Maid” prior to leaving. When everyone wants some quiet time, encourage the children to enjoy a game of cards. Another option is to purchase long pieces of string, tying off the ends so you have one continuous loop. Then, teach the children how to make designs with the string while on the hand or ask them to come up with their own unique design.
Finally, if you have a laptop computer with a DVD player, take it. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Bring several movies for the children to watch and when you or they want a break from playing “games”, you can pop in a DVD. This is also nice for the hotel room, saving money on movie rental while also providing some down time for the children.
