Many children are simply not interested in reading only because they do not know how to let the mind get involved with the story. Although kids are interested in reading, some just find it hard. Today, a number of DVDs, videos, and movies have been made that actually encourage and promote reading.
For starters, you can visit your local library where you will discover not only books but also a number of videos and DVDs that are the electronic representation of some of your child’s favorite books. That way, instead of reading words, the child can enjoy the same story while still having the same option to learn. In fact, you can purchase the book that goes with the DVD, video, or movie, talking about the differences between the two story lines.
The same is true with many of the movies in the theater, which are often based on books. Walt Disney is great about this, supporting a book already read or promoting a book that your child may want to read. Many times, after the child has seen the book on the big screen, he or she is more interested in reading the book, which again opens the eyes to differences.
In addition to books, many DVDs, videos, and movies are also based off favorite television shows but with a new and different perspective. If you do not have a library nearby or perhaps a theater, you can always check the local public station where many great children’s shows are shown. Typically, you find movies such as Old Yeller, Black Beauty, and Anne of Green Gables to name a few, all of these excellent choices.
Another option to encourage reading for your child is to purchase DVDs, videos, and movies based on people, animals, or characters of which your child is interested. As an example, if your child were into baseball, then choose something such as Field of Dreams. With that, your child can then purchase or check out books from the library based on famous baseball players. The possibilities are exciting and by working with your child in choosing the right DVD, video, or movie, you will begin to notice a growing interest.
