Green Celebrities: Daryl Hannah

Like Robert Redford, Daryl Hannah has been a long time advocate of environmentalism. And, like Woody Harrelson, she has joined the growing list of celebrities that have been arrested for supporting green practices.

Daryl is known for being one of the first celebrities to drive a car that runs on biodiesel. In case you haven’t been reading our blogs, biodiesel is made from vegetable oil. Daryl was featured in a video for her blog in which she even drank the biodiesel fuel, having poured it straight from the pump to a glass, to prove a point of how biodiesel is non-toxic. Her matte black 1983 El Camino that ran on biodiesel was sold at auction last year for $15,600.

She was also one of the first celebrities to speak out about what she felt was a war based on oil. She appeared on the “O’Reilly Factor” after September 11th to talk about biodiesel options that wouldn’t make us dependent on oil. Of course, Daryl has to travel for her job, but when she travels, she purchases carbon offsets to cancel out any carbon her travel generates.

Daryl’s devotion to green doesn’t stop at transportation. She has been a vegetarian since she was a child. Both of her two homes – in the Rockies and Southern California – run on solar panels and graywater systems.

Daryl was arrested on June 13, 2006 when she chained herself to a large walnut tree to protest the eviction of farmers from a piece of South Central Los Angeles land that had been established for city people to grow their own food. The new owner wanted to evict the farmers so he could have a warehouse built on the land. She was arrested again in June of this year when she protested mountain top mining in West Virginia. She and 31 other protesters blocked a road near a coal processing plant after being prevented from entering the plant by miners.

About Libby Pelham

I have always loved to write and Families.com gives me the opportunity to share my passion for writing with others. I work full-time as a web developer at UTHSC and most of my other time is spent with my son (born 2004). I love everything pop culture, but also enjoy writing about green living (it has opened my eyes to many things!) and health (got to worry about that as you get older!).
