“Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss

“Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss is by far one of my favorite children’s books of all time. Surely everyone can remember the lines “Do you like green eggs and ham? I do not like them Sam-I-am”. The main character even goes as far as to say, “I would not like them here or there. I would not like them anywhere.”

The other character in the book continues to offer different potential egg and ham eating scenarios to Sam. Sam is adamant about how he would never ever eat green eggs and ham no matter what the circumstance.

In the middle of this book however Sam actually tries Green Eggs and ham and discovers that he does in fact like green eggs and ham, and would eat them in all of the places that he originally said he would have nothing to do with them.

I remember this book having a dramatic effect on my childhood. I used to be a seriously picky eater, and would insist that I would have nothing to do with certain foods no matter what the circumstance. When I finally gave in and started to try some of those foods I discovered some of my favorite foods (Steamed Broccoli- Yum!).

If you have a picky eater, this is a book that they should definitely read. They can see how even though Sam thought he didn’t like green eggs and ham that once he tried them he realized that he liked them a lot.

This book also has a great buily in activity. You and your children can make green eggs and ham. Of course this experiment only really works if your children like eggs. Add a drop of green food coloring to some scrambled eggs for instant “Green eggs”. After my mom made them once I remember asking specifically for green eggs for breakfast all the time. I was convinced that I only liked the green variety of egg.

“Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss is available at most booksellers as well as online at Amazon.com.
