When I first spotted the Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook with recipes inspired by Dr. Suess I wondered what on earth it could have for recipes besides of course, green eggs and ham. Being a mother of three, I’m fairly well versed in Suess books. I thought about the Scrambled Eggs Super-Dee-Dooper and frankfurter roasts that the Sneeches with star-bellies host. But I couldn’t think of much else.
I am amazed at how many food items Suess included in his books. The cookbook includes recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages, and even desserts. The recipes are accented with quotes and familiar illustrations from his stories. A few recipes have color photographs. Some of the recipes sound delicious – like The Cat in the Hat Tub Cake made from angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries. The Pink Yink Ink Drink sounds yummy, too. It’s made from blackberries, milk, strawberries and honey.
Some recipes sound a bit odd. For Who-Roast-Beast the author suggests using a fryer chicken and stuffing a few mushroom slices under the skin to give it a bumpy beast looking texture. The Yot in the Pot has potatoes, corn, clams in their shells, onions, and Italian sausages. There’s no way my children would eat that.
Some of the recipes are Suess inspired, but not actually by a food mentioned in the book. Two examples are Chocolate Rocks and Schlottz’s Knots. The rocks are made from cream, powdered sugar, and chocolate. The Knots are from the Crumple-horn, Web-footed, Green-bearded Schlottz whose “tail is entailed with un-solvable knots. The cookbook shows long, droopy knotted pretzels made from bread-stick dough and sea salt. They look like a lot of fun.
Other recipes include Noodle-Eating-Poodle Noodles, Gertrude McFuzz-y Berries, Nice Lime Ice, Zans’ Cans Chili, and Daisy-Head Mayzie Burgers.
I can see this book having great appeal with parents and teachers of preschool and elementary age children. Suess fans will also enjoy it.
This book was published by Random House in 2006. It is spiral bound and lays flat for easy recipe viewing.
