Halloween is almost here, but it is not too late to still think green. If you are still looking for a costume, I wish I had told you sooner about Green Halloween. It is a website that promotes a green Halloween.
The site sponsors a yearly National Costume Swap Day, but I learned about it too late this year to advertise it here. It was Oct 13th, but it is still not too late to hold your own costume swap day. You can get together with friends from playgroup, other mothers from school or church or anyone you know with kids close to your child’s age and suggest a costume swap. There are so many parents that have perfectly good costumes, but their children don’t want to wear those two years in a row, so a swap with friends is a perfect idea. It helps recycle and saves you money.
And, you still have time to green up your Halloween. Green Halloween offers more advice than just that for costume swapping. Planning a Halloween party? Green Halloween can help with green ideas for the party. They even suggest that you have a neighborhood party in lieu of trick-or-treating door to door – what a great way to meet neighbors!
As far as trick-or-treating goes, Green Halloween suggests you fill up your young ones with a health dinner before taking them out, to help curb their urge to eat lots of sweets along the way. If you are worried about too many sweets, talk to the kids about it. You can offer them alternatives such as yogurt, apples, or pretzels to trade for their sugary sweets.
If you are going to be the one staying home and handing out goodies, Green Halloween has some ideas for alternatives to candy. You can purchase small trinkets such as tops, erasers, pencils, or stickers. You may want to do something a little more special like polished rocks or seashells.
If you get time before the big day (it’s only three days away!), take a look at Green Halloween’s website and you will find some cool, green ideas for Halloween.
