I grew up in a house that was crawling with green plants. Okay, they weren’t really crawling – they were still in their pots, and behaving themselves – but they were everywhere. Boston ferns, philodendrons, silver pothos – we had them all. It was our own private jungle. We lived this way because my mother loves plants, but there were other benefits as well.
First is air quality. A green plant breathes in carbon dioxide, and we breathe in oxygen. So when you have a plant, it takes in both the carbon dioxide and the oxygen, filters out the oxygen, and releases it, cleaner than it entered. We are then breathing cleaner oxygen. We do the same favor for the plant, and so both plant and human are healthier.
Second is the atmosphere in the home. Plants are living things, and so they have life force. But it’s a calming life force, rather than an energetic one, and so surrounding yourself with plants can help encourage a calmer environment within your home.
Third is the beauty a plant adds to a room. There’s just something about a live plant that you can never replicate with silk. You can get plants to tie in with your decor – for instance, getting a palm tree to go in a tropical-themed room, or bamboo to go in your Asian-inspired room—and you can put them in pots that fit in to your color scheme. And unlike pink plastic prancing ponies, a plant is never tacky. Unless it’s a cactus with googly eyes glued on it and wearing a tiny hat … that could be tacky.
Plants give a home personality, they add a touch of nature to the indoors, they help create a soothing atmosphere, and they’re very inexpensive. All around, they’re an excellent way to tie your home together and give it that extra touch it might be missing.
