I don’t know if you remember, but back in 2007, rocker Sheryl Crow caused a bit of a stir with her idea of how to be green in the bathroom. She blogged that she thought people should limit themselves to the number of squares of toilet paper they used per sitting. She suggested using only one square unless there were “pesky occasions” where you might need to use two or three. I am assuming this was reserved for number two bathroom visits only. Anyhow, her younger brother suggested she wash out the one square after using it.
This caused quite an uproar and she was questioned by many talk show hosts and reporters. Sheryl later admitted she was just kidding about the toilet paper limits, but she did like that her blog brought green issues to light.
Now, I am not suggesting that you limit your sheets in the bathroom, but here are a few tips for going green with toilet paper usage:
– Use recycled toilet paper. Seventh Generation makes some that is 100% recycled. If you think it doesn’t matter, consider this: If every household in America replaced twelve pack of regular toilet paper with one recycled twelve pack, we could save almost a million trees and almost two billion gallons of water.
– Use one-ply toilet paper instead of two-ply.
– Use chlorine free toilet paper to reduce exposure to dioxin.
– Buy in bulk. If you buy one twelve pack instead of twelve individually rolls of toilet paper, you save on packaging waste.
– Avoid scented toilet paper. The scents added to some toilet paper brands may give you headaches or cause allergies or asthma.
– Look for rolls with more squares per roll. This lasts longer and also saves on packaging waste.
– Recycle the toilet paper rolls. Don’t just toss these in the garbage, but toss them in your recycled bin.
