Green Travel

Getting ready for your summer vacation? Here are some ways that you can make sure your travel is as green as possible. Here are my tips.

Stay close to home

Vacationing close to home means that there is less travel, so you will be putting less pollution into the air. Reducing your travel time is a very green thing. There are many local activities near any large town or city to explore.

When you are on the road, bring along some supplies instead of buying them. For example, fill a cooler and or water bottles with water rather than bringing or buying water in plastic one-time-use bottles.

You can bring other items as well. If you are taking a drive and will be stopping for fast food along the way, you can bring your own silverware and leave the plastic stuff alone.

When driving, keep a slow and steady pace and make sure that your tires are properly inflated. This will increase your fuel efficiency.

Choose a bus or a train trip instead of driving.

If you are flying somewhere and need to rent a car, choose a hybrid model. Did you know that in some major cities you can actually rent a hybrid car by the hour?

Also while flying pack light. The less baggage you have the less fuel the plane will require. Less fuel means less toxic gasses released into the atmosphere.

Instead of buying travel size soap, shampoo, etc., get refillable bottles that you can fill with your own products. Leave the complimentary stuff at the hotel.

Get your guidebooks from the library or a used bookstore. You’ll save on paper and the fuel it cost to ship the book to the bookstore. Reusing resources is always a good way to be green.

When you are out shopping, buy local, from produce to souvenirs. Hint, not all souvenirs are made at the source. Or, just skip the souvenirs altogether.
