Green Uses for Vinegar – Part 1

Isn’t it a great thing when you can take something as simple as vinegar – something so cheap and easily assessable – and do great things around the house with it?

For one thing, vinegar is great for cleaning household areas including the bathroom (i.e. getting rid of that bathtub ring and scum from the shower doors), countertops, soap dishes, the refrigerator, and cutting boards. My husband also buys dishwasher cleaners, but guess what? Putting a little vinegar in your dishwasher each month will clean it. And, if your coffee pot is getting a bit funky, run vinegar through one cycle, then run a cycle of plain water to clean it.

Vinegar is also good for polishing faucets and stainless steel appliances. But, what is you need a scrub? You can make one with 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar, 2 cups of baking soda, and 10 to 12 drops of essential oil. Put that in a glass jar and you have a scrub that will last you for a little while.

If you run out of Windex, you can make your own using 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of liquid detergent plus 3 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 cups of water. Put this in a spray bottle, shake, and use.

I have cats and a dog and if you have pets, you know they have accidents. But, these can easily be cleaned up by sprinkling baking soda on the spot and leaving overnight. Vacuum up the baking soda the next day then clean with a mixture of 2 cups of vinegar mixed into a gallon of water.

One cool thing that I saw on Pinterest was how you could use vinegar to clean your showerhead. We moved into an older condo and you cannot remove the showerhead like you can on newer models. And it was funky. But, if you mix 1 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda in a plastic bag. Use a twist tie to attach the bag to the showerhead and let it set overnight.

Tomorrow, I’ll blog about more great uses for vinegar.
