Growing Older

nullGrowing older doesn’t mean life has to be uninteresting. Also it doesn’t necessarily mean dressing in drab and uninteresting colors and clothing styles. I like to wear blue, purple, red or hot pink rather than neutral beiges etc. Mick likes to see me in those colors. And I like to please him. For Christmas he bought me a beautiful patchwork skirt in those shades. Yes, he went and picked it all by himself.

What’s more, it’s something I love and could have picked myself, which shows how well he knows my tastes. Yet I’ve hear other women tell me their husbands wouldn’t have a clue how or where to shop for anything personal for them. Yes, I do appreciate how blessed I am with my husband and why I love him for so many reasons.

One way of showing that is to try and look after his health. I was happy to read an article recently about the positive effects of green tea as Mick drinks a fair bit of green tea with lemon.

When it comes to exercise Mick and I can still play five set of tennis. We still go for a brisk 45 minute walk or a longer but more leisurely walk with the dogs. It just takes he body a bit longer to recover than it used to. But we’re not ready to get out the wheelchairs yet. Neither are we trying to pretend we’re young and can manage all night parties like we used to, once. We do the obvious things like trying to get enough sleep and look after our health but we are not trying to pretend to be 20 again.
.
The reality is, we enjoy life and enjoy it together as a married couple, thankful for what we have in each other. Someone recently congratulated me when she heard we’d been married over 40 years, as though it was a major achievement. Maybe it in today’s society it is. But I can’t imagine being married to anyone else. We’re happy growing older together.

My calendar for today says ‘whatever you do, do it with kindness and love.’ Sounds like good advice for marriage. If more marriages took this approach and were based on a strong love, friendship and kindness, and commitment to each other, we might have fewer affairs and less divorce and heartache in our world.
