Orchids are one of my favorite flowers. They are great to grow for several reasons. Firstly, they come in a huge range of colors from white through beige and pinks and greens to deep maroons and purples.
Last weekend my husband and I went to a local wholesale nursery and of course we came away with three new orchids, two are green. I love green flowers nearly as much as I love blue ones. The third is a rich pinky red.
We already have several orchids. Throughout the year they grow outside in pots in a spot where they will get morning sun but not get baked by the sun. As soon as they start to flower, we bring them inside in their pots and just put a small tray under them. Orchids will flower inside for months. It’s certainly cheaper than having to buy fresh flowers and they look so spectacular.
At present we have the three new orchids we bought, flowering in our dining room in a light sunny spot. The others are a little later in flowering, which is good as they will be flowering after these three have stopped.
When we bought our orchids last week we spoke to the woman at the nursery and she suggested orchids need feeding, usually around Mothers Day , so early May and Melbourne Cup day which is the beginning of November. For those of you in the northern hemisphere just make sure it is late autumn and then late spring.
The great thing about orchids is that they will multiply, which means you end up with several orchids for a small outlay. And they bloom so well. One of our orchids at present has three spikes on it. A friend of ours one time had sixteen spikes. I’d suggest hers probably gets more attention than ours do.
Orchids don’t require any special skills. If that were the case we wouldn’t be able to grow them, as we don’t have a high success rate with plants in pots, except for the orchids. So orchids are good even for an inexperienced or lackadaisical gardener to try.
