Gunnar Peterson’s Core Secrets, Part Two

Yesterday morning I got up bright and early, got my workout gear on and headed straight to my living room. If you read my last article, I recently bought Gunner Peterson’s Core Secrets workout DVD. Thought I’d give everyone an update.

I’ll admit it, I’m a little sore and my abs are REALLY sore, but I figure that’s a good thing. I’m working muscles that I don’t obviously at my gym workouts, which is exactly what I need.

This morning I decided to do the “FUN-damentals” and the “Ab Assault” which sounded like a killer.

The Fundamentals was a 25 minute long intro video with simple and easy step-by-step instructions. Gunnar and his crew guide you through about 10 exercises with about 15 or so reps each– including things like crunches, leg presses and lunges. The exercises are fairly simple, can be done at any exercise level, and you can go at your own pace.

Something they don’t mention is that some of the exercises require that you use a free weight. They suggest 10 pounds (!) but that seemed a little much for me as a beginner, so I used a 5 pound weight that seemed to work just fine. It’s a little difficult at first to get everything down while balancing on the ball—but by the end you’re not too wobbly.

I also threw in the Ab Assault to see what that was all about. I’ll admit it, it was kind of tough and some of the exercises weren’t exactly for beginners, so I sat out one or two. I mean I’m not trying to kill myself! I’m a big fan of crunches, and the ball supports your back nicely, so that took a lot of stress off my spine. The Ab Assault lasts about 20 minutes and on most of the exercises seem virtually effortless. However, when you stand up you can understand why they call it an “assault”….ouch! I was feeling the burn already.

I’m going to stick with it 2-3 times a week to see if the claims to get Brooke Burke’s abs are true….I’ll get back to you on that one!
