Gutters and Winter Damage

It is important to make sure that your home’s gutters are in working order now before winter sets in. Winter can cause a lot of damage to your home if your gutters aren’t working properly.

For example, an ice dam can form, allowing water to back up and get into your roofing shingles, under the tar paper and right into the plywood beneath. The next thing you know, your roof, fascia and soffit are all damaged. Your trim can rot unnoticed for many years. You can also wind up with insects and mold this way.

Your home can also be subject to wood rot in the walls, if the weight of the ice and snow pulls your gutter away from the house. The gap allows water to get in and travel down the walls all the way to your basement and foundation. Once the damage occurs, it can be an expensive fix.

There are some telltale signs of bad gutters. Check your home and your gutters now for the following:

Gutters that are tilted away from the house.

Water streaks on your gutter or your fascia board.

Actual water leaks when it rains.

If you notice any of these problems, you should take action to repair or replace your gutters.

There are a number of new products out there on the market, from one piece gutters that tend to stay put, to gutter helmets and screens that keep out debris. There is even a little robot that will clean your gutters for you.

Do some research to find the best products that fit your home and your budget.

If you are handy, you may be able to install new gutters or gutter accessories yourself to save some money, but if you aren’t sure, then it is always best to call in a professional installer. Make sure that you address any damage at the same time.
