Hair for Your Baby

What is it about pregnancy hormones that makes one more prone to spontaneity? From food cravings to buying clothes that don’t even fit yet, I had a long list of new experiences and unfettered whims while pregnant with our first baby.

At seventeen weeks of pregnancy I made a decision that I never had the gumption to follow through with before. I cut my hair short! I have always worn my hair long and curly. It’s kind of my signature. Still, this was a something I had considered on and off for the last fifteen years but never had the guts to actually do. I even attempted to lop off the locks my junior year of college but was easily persuaded by the stylist to keep my hair long. All it took was pregnancy and I quickly and willing took the plunge into more carefree hair.

When I told my post-college stylist my plan, she was just as excited as I was, “ I love the transformation when clients choose a style that is more extreme!” In thirty short minutes my hair went from well below my shoulders to well above in edgy layers. My spastic ringlets were transformed into soft waves. I was ecstatic! I felt like a new person, which was especially welcoming after weeks of morning sickness. Many of my friends and relatives where shocked that I cut off my curls, but they couldn’t deny that my new do complemented my baby-bump-bod. Who knew that pregnancy would motivate me to do something I’ve always wanted to do! I even felt lighter! This hair cut was just the “lift” I needed.

It didn’t stop there. In the months that followed, I found my self frequenting the local hair salon. I tried several short cut styles. My hair went from “feet” in length to mere inches. It seemed my need for simplicity was embodied by my hair. So go ahead let your spontaneity urge you to lose your locks, you may even be disappointed at how fast it grows back!
